It is very much the undiscovered and unspoilt region of Tanzania as due to its position it was ‘off limits’ to tourists throughout the period of the Mozambiquean Civil war from 1979 to 1994. The region has a quirky history and was once the subject of a failed multi million pound investment from the British Government in 1945 that came to be known as the ‘Ground Nut scandal’ From the Makonde Plateau, home to the Makonde tribe, to the wonderful ruins of Kilwa Kivinje, from the faded colonial glory of Lindi to the stunning Mnazi Bay Marine reserve, there is something for all visitors.
