It’s the people behind the scenes that really help to make Ten Degrees so special. The lodge has a team of nine local staff who are hard working, resourceful and loyal.  Some of the staff have even been with us since we started the lodge in 1999.

If you come and stay with us make sure you take some time to meet them and have a chat, you’ll get a real insight into the local culture and the realities of life in modern day Tanzania.

Manager: Mohammad Ali, nickname ‘Babu’

Babu, which is a name given to our elders for respect, has been with 10 Degrees South since the beginning in 1999.  Babu manages the day to day running of the lodge and he is the person that will great you with his big beautiful smile upon arrival. He is also our resident chef extraordinaire, and he has plenty of chef experience in other parts of Tanzania. Babu is originally from the Masasi District which is more inland, but has now lived in Mikindani for 9 years. But before this, he lived and worked as a cook in Zanzibar, Pemba. He says he likes working at 10 Degrees because it lets him lead a good life and he love Mikindani because there are many good people and they all share their experiences as a community.

Gardener: Ishmalil Mnandi

Ishmalil just recently joined the 10 Degrees team and is constantly sharing his enthusiasm, hard work and creativity to improve our beautiful garden. Ishmalil is 36 years old and has 3 children and 2 grand children. He was born and raised here in Mikindani. This is his first form of employment ever and he says he is enjoying it because now he can support his family much easier, but also he likes creating a garden space for the guests to enjoy.

Resident Carpenter: Ali Mohammad Ngombo

Ali, who is 37 years old and has 2 kids began working as a carpenter in 1989. He now shares his wealth of experience with us at 10 Degrees creating all sorts of furniture, new rooms and strange artwork projects that come his way. A typical conversation with Ali goes something like, “Ali, can you make this?” (Imagine a silly stick figure drawing) And after a no problem and some hammering, an amazing piece is built from scratch!  But he says he mostly enjoys building furniture and roofing.

Housekeeper: Somoe Athumani Somoe is 34 years olds, mother to 4 kids ages 18, 15, 11, and 6 years old. So, needless to say she is a very busy woman. So, while she is not running around after her children, she is busy keeping the accommodation clean and comfortable.

Cook and Housekeeper: Mwanahisi  Bacari

Mwanahimisi came to 10 Degrees in 2004 to work as a housekeeper for the lodge. However, she soon became an apprentice to Babu and now she is an important part of the restaurant. You can often hear her contagious laughter accompanying the savoury smells of her cooking, coming from the kitchen.

Mariamu has been with 10 Degrees since 2005. She is our sassy 21 year old bartender, who loves to joke with the clients. Apart from work, she likes to cook and play with her 4 year old daughter, Salva. In her precious free time, she is really into Bollywood films, because she loves the flamboyant dancing and singing. The rest of staff thinks that Mariamu harbours a dream of becoming a Bollywood actress herself someday.
